Mental Health Awareness Week is an important reminder that our mental wellbeing deserves just as much care and attention as our physical health. Conversations around emotional wellbeing encourage a pause to reflect and better understand we feel.

At first glance, the Wheel of Emotions emotions seems simple but it illustrates to us that emotions are far more complex and connected than we often realise. For example, anger can sometimes hide feelings of hurt or fear. Anxiety may stem from uncertainty or overwhelm. Joy can exist alongside nervousness when facing change. By identifying emotions more clearly, we become better equipped to communicate our needs, process difficult experiences, and support others with empathy.
The Wheel of Emotions also reminds us that no feeling is “wrong.” Emotions are signals, not weaknesses. They help us understand ourselves, our boundaries, and our experiences. Learning to recognise and name emotions can improve relationships, reduce stress, and support healthier coping strategies.
During Mental Health Awareness Week, it’s worth taking a moment to check in with yourself:
How am I really feeling today?
What emotions have I been avoiding?
Have I given myself space to rest and reflect?
Who can I talk to if I’m struggling?
Open, honest discussions create safer spaces where people feel heard, understood, and supported.Whether through journaling, therapy, conversations with loved ones, mindfulness, or simply using an emotions wheel to better understand your feelings, every small step towards emotional awareness matters. Understanding our emotions is not a sign of weakness; it is a step towards healing, growth, and connection.
